Climate Mitigation and Policies

IDPCS is actively working in the areas of climate change mitigation, carbon emissions reduction, and renewable energy adoption in India. One key focus is on the short-lived climate pollutants (SLCPs) such as black carbon and methane, which contribute significantly to global warming. The development of the SMoG-India emission inventory aids in estimating emissions from different sectors, aiding in mitigation strategies. Informal interventions, particularly in the residential and the agricultural sectors, have also been identified as crucial for substantial emission reductions in the next few decades. The integration of these interventions into the national climate policies is needed for effective climate action and this is where IDPCS has research efforts. IDPCS faculty work in the domains of infrastructure developments related to several domains with impacts on climate mitigation and policy strategies for the country. These include integration of electric vehicles in the electricity grid, green hydrogen production, carbon budget allocation on sectoral and sub-sectoral levels, mitigation pathways for industries, adoption potential of novel transport fuels like ethanol-blended fuel and compressed natural gas using system dynamics models, development and analysis of carbon capture and utilisation technologies, and techno-economic and life cycle analysis of various systems and sectors. Such research offers insights into the various possible emission scenarios and the associated challenges of meeting the reduction goals and the climate and energy targets set by the country. The various studies typically explore technology adoption, emissions, and policy related aspects to enhance the adoption rates towards meeting the country’s climate goals. The research also addresses the questions related to the transition to a renewable energy future, with a spotlight on the potential impacts of large-scale renewable energy projects. Understanding these complex interactions and impacts across different perspectives (spatial, temporal, and value) plays a significant role towards supporting the climate-energy-sustainable development discussions for effective policy making towards the various mitigation efforts.
