We investigate how deep convective clouds initiate, organize, and evolve, and how their near-storm environments shape precipitation and other high-impact outcomes. Polarimetric radar and lightning observations let us probe the otherwise hidden structure of convective clouds. Questions we ask include: (i) What controls convective initiation and storm lifetime? (ii) How do environmental transitions alter storm structure and precipitation?, (iii) Why do storms in similar environments sometimes evolve very differently?
