India-UK-Japan workshop on Climate Resilience
Event Date:
Saturday, 25 September 2021 - 2:00pm to 5:30pm

On behalf of the Chair, IMechE Process Division, and Dean R&D of IIT Bombay Prof.Milind D Atrey, we extend an invitation to the India-UK-Japan Workshop on Climate Resilience.

The Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE UK, Japan, and India) and IIT Bombay are organizing a workshop on Climate Resilience addressing three key climate change challenges which need urgent technical, policy, governance, and socioeconomic solutions:

  1. Residential and Workplace Cooling
  2. Urban and Rural Flood Risks
  3. Sea Level Rise

Sectors related to infrastructure, industry, manufacturing, housing, energy, agriculture, fisheries, trade, travel, transport, etc. are likely to be severely affected by Climate Change impacts and hazards, as outlined recently in the latest IPCC 6th Assessment Report. These challenges need to be addressed through a combination of research, technology development, and design, planning for sustainable development, environmental protection and conservation, and changes in our production and consumption patterns, travel behavior, energy use, resource use, and habitat planning.

IMechE UK, Japan, and India join hands with the IDP in Climate Studies at IIT Bombay to launch an initiative to bring together academia, industry, and government to enhance climate resilience. This workshop is envisaged as the first of a series, and as a platform to create long-term networks and collaborations to co-design sustainable climate change solutions for long-term transformation.

Key Workshop coordinators: Prof. Milind Atrey (Dean R&D, IIT Bombay), Dr. Tim Fox (Climate Resilience Consultant and Chair, Climate Change Adaptation Working Group, IMechE UK), Mr. Sunil Panchbai, (IMechE India Secretary, IMechEProcess Industries Division), Prof. D. Parthasarathy (IDP Climate Studies, IIT Bombay), and Mr. Michael Ebina San (IMechE Japan Committee Chair)

The workshop will start with three plenary speakers on each of the above themes. This will be followed by three parallel sessions on each of the themes with three speakers each from India, UK and Japan speaking on each of the three themes. The speakers will be drawn from academia, industry, and government. A selected group of stakeholders from different stakeholder communities will be invited to participate, contribute to the discussions, and become part of the Climate Resilience Network.

Workshop Outcome: Launch of a collaborative network on climate resilience which will seek to bring industry, academic, and government partners together to contribute to the evolution of policies, industry standards, and research programmes in the areas of climate mitigation, resilience, and adaptation.
